It was a pretty great day. Most of it was spent baking a cake and cupcakes, though we did go out for breakfast at the fabulous Stella G's restaurant. I've been baking cakes since I was 11 or 12 largely by myself. When I was younger, my father helped me put the pans in the oven and supervised stovetop use. Now that I'm older, his role has largely been reduced to stirring things when my arms get tired, dumping ingredients into bowls, and getting things down from the upper shelves of the kitchen. He confirmed this himself, and added "doing what you tell me" to the list of things he does while baking.
This year, my boyfriend Erik (who I baked a cake for in January) got the honour of helping me bake. Yes... I bake my own birthday cakes. For a while I'd bake my parents really elaborate cakes, only to make myself a box cake for my birthday. This year I made myself a vanilla buttermilk cake which turned out delicious. For some reason he's not terribly smiley in either of these photos, which is strange because he's a very funny person.
Here's a better picture of the final cake. I had a lot of fun doing the vines, though I think it would have turned out better if I hadn't completely free-handed it. I'm not entirely certain what pattern vines normally grow, so they went a bit squiggly.
My dad owns a 3D printer (isn't that neat?) and he printed me some stuff for my birthday.
This is Jiji the cat from Kiki's Delivery Service. I have a large stuffed animal Jiji, but I think the little printed one is really cute. He also printed me a silver Totoro.
This is a dragon! Specifically, it's a teenage Drogon from Game of Thrones. While Drogon is black in the show, my father decided to print him silver for the details to show up better. He's a pretty cool dragon.
So I had a pretty fabulous birthday overall. We went out for dinner at a fancy place and I got one of those cute Polaroid cameras in eggplant purple. I don't think I've quite processed that I leave for Italy in five days because everything has been a whirlwind, but at least it's been full of delicious food and wonderful people.
